details & photos
The very first electric bicycle holiday in the World has taken place in Co Limerick, supported by Limerick Enterprise board & the woodlands house hotel Adare.
Goeco, Irelands only electric bicycle specialists came up with the concept to give people from all over the world the chance to see just what an electric bicycle has to offer as well as have a great week end away in Ireland.
Nine nationalities attended the event in the Woodlands House hotel Adare which commenced with an opening dinner & ceremony conducted by MEP Brian Crowley & John Gallahue LCC Cathaoirleach.
“I applaud Marty & Paul from Goeco for their initiative, & to see so many people from all over Europe coming to Ireland for such an event is amazing in these trying times, its families like the Mannering's that we need to encourage to pull us through this mess” he added “we will come out of this recession the stronger for it with young lads like Paul here behind international initiatives like this one when others are loosing hearA mighty traditional music session followed in Timmy Macs bar featuring Eileen Leonard, Marty Mannering, Bill Mannering & Pat Mulcahy. “I had seen nights like this on the TV, but to experience it is another thing all together” Said the participant from Scotland.
“We invited the leaders from the electric bike world to experience what we have to offer in Ireland which included participants from England, Scotland, Denmark, France, Sweden & Ireland. Also the editor of the only electric bike magazine in Europe “A to B” had to come to see what was going on in Co Limerick” Said Paul Ryan of Goeco.ie
Saturday seen the start of the weekend with a 7 mile cycle to Askeaton Abbey, this included a guided tour by historian Anthony Sheehy who can be contacted on: 086 0850174. The tour then continued onto Ballysteen & through to Beagh Castle for tea & sandwiches served by Goeco’s dedicated staff & the most friendly post mistress in Ireland, Mary Hayes from Ballysteen it’s self. As one rider said “It was like a mirage coming over the hill to the castle, & the soup, location & food was just what everyone required but the last thing they expected, its one surprise after another.”
Denis King from Newcastle West said “I’ve lived in Co Limerick all my life & never realised how much scenery we have & how beautiful West Limerick is”
fter the lunch stop it was along the Beautiful Shannon estuary heading for Curragh chase national park. Here the opportunity for a bit of off-roading which many participants took advantage off with only a few falls & tumbles. On then to Adare to finish the loop with a stop at Aherns bar to watch Ireland tackle Scotland in rugby & enjoy a few well deserved pints. “Nothing seems to be too much hassle for Marty & his team” said Jens Hyman from Denmark,” I never realised Ireland had such beautiful scenery outside of Dublin which is all we see in Denmark” he added.
Saturday night seen more entertainment & the swapping of stories about getting lost. Smiles were seen throughout every minute of the day & night which makes it all worthwhile & it proves we have an initiative which will be in demand” said Marty Mannering MD of Goeco.ie
People of all ages from 14 to 78 took part, women & men, fit & unfit, that’s what an electric bike brings to a touring holiday, all the fun of a cycling holiday but no pain. Electric bicycles do up to 80% of the work whist pedalling so hills & long distances are a thing of the past; a 32 mile cycle in one day is well achievable for anyone & everyone.
